Sewing Machines and Facebook

I am a recent joiner of the Facebook world and I'm not quite sure what all the fuss is about. Sure I've found a few friends that I haven't seen in a long time.
Okay, but-------------------
Then what....
To me it's a bit like the fancy-shmancy sewing machine that my mother-in-law wants. You would probably need to be interested in doing more than a zigzag stitch in order to merit buying a machine that is $2000. Thus it is with Facebook, I have no idea what it means to be 'tagged in an album', or 'poked' or to 'become a fan of'. The only thing I've found useful on that sight is the messaging system but once I've come in contact with a friend, then I can just go back to zigzag stitching with my simple email. And honestly, I'm not sure that everyone wants to know exactly what I'm doing at random points during the day.
To me it just is a throw back to the less than healthful emotionally supportive environment of High School: who can have the most friends sign their year book,
Or their wall.

AMEN to THAT! Seriously. I feel exactly the same way. I wouldn't have a facebook or myspace account except that it's the only way to keep in touch with a few of my family members and friends. They don't do emails or blogs or other forms of communication. I'm really not a big fan, though.

I just signed up also and although I don't spend my life on Facebook, I think that (just like all tools) if it is used wisely it can be so much more than some popularity contest. I am extremely busy and yet at the same time I can get quite lonely because with Jeff gone a lot and other circumstances, I can go days without really seeing very many people...and I crave contact with people. However, the phone doesn't work for me. Also, I know a lot of people from college days whom Jeff and I had lost contact with (no e-mail or anything) and now we are able to keep up with each others' lives. Facebook has been a great way for me to have some contact that fits in my life and schedule right now. I do think that a lot of it is silly but I maximize the parts that work for me...I guess I can see where sometimes it's OK to live a little and enjoy the fancy schmancy machine :).

On the other hand, if it didn't fit a need for me (like it doesn't for you) I would totally give it up because I don't have time for the wrong kind of fancy-schmancy :) Hope you find something that works for you!

I'm with you! Besides, who wants everyone to read what you write and what you feel all the time. Let's admit it, even though I made contact with old "friends", the reality is that those people weren't always the best of friends and that is why we "lost" contact. I have a fancy schmancy sewing machine and although I love looking at the really great things I can do, I rarely use them!
